Understanding Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases have been a persistent challenge to humanity throughout history. These illnesses are caused by pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and they can spread from person to person, affecting individuals and communities alike. Understanding infectious diseases is crucial for prevention, early detection, and effective treatment. On this page, we aim to provide you with comprehensive information about infectious diseases, their causes, symptoms, prevention, and management.

What are Infectious Diseases?

Infectious diseases are illnesses caused by microorganisms that can be transmitted from one person, animal, or object to another. Common examples include the flu, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and COVID-19. These diseases can range from mild to severe and can be acute or chronic in nature.Causes of Infectious Diseases:

Bacteria: Diseases like strep throat, tuberculosis, and urinary tract infections are caused by bacterial infections.

Viruses: Influenza, COVID-19, and HIV are caused by viral infections.

Fungi: Candidiasis and athlete’s foot are examples of fungal infections.

Parasites: Malaria and intestinal worms are caused by parasitic infections.

Capital Infectious Disease Associates Specializes in HIV Care.

HIV can be overwhelming especially if you don’t know anything about the virus or understand the options you have to still live a long, healthy life.

WHAT IS HIV?

HIV means human immunodeficiency virus, HIV destroys the CD4 cells in the human body. As a result, the immune system collapses and falls vulnerable to a host of diseases, including simple colds and flu. Since the body no longer has the type of blood cells capable of fighting infections, the human body is now an easy target.

Bacteria

Hepatitis And It’s Causes.

Let’s talk about the different types of Hepatitis.

Get Vaccinated. Get Tested.

Many people with hepatitis do not have symptoms and do not know they are infected. If symptoms occur with an acute infection, they can appear anytime from 2 weeks to 6 months after exposure. Symptoms of chronic viral hepatitis can take decades to develop.

Bacteria

What’s the difference between a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and a sexually transmitted disease (STD)?

An infection occurs when a virus, bacteria, or parasite enters your body, and your immune system kicks in to try to fight it the outcome is an infection. An STD is when an STI becomes chronic causing symptoms, damaging parts of your body, and leading to illness. Many infections never develop into diseases.

Most of the time, STIs never get to the disease stage — people may not even know when they have one. STIs usually don’t cause symptoms, and they can often be treated or cured with medicine before they cause long-term harm. And it’s an infection, not a disease, that gets passed between people during sexual contact. So using “infection” just makes more sense.

Let’s talk about the types of sexual infections.

Are you sexually active? Here are ways you can reduce your risk and protect your health.

Taking care of your sexual health is nothing to be shy about.  If left untreated, STIs can cause severe health problems.  If you’ve been sexually active, it’s a good idea to be tested.

WHAT IS
HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a type of treatment used to speed up healing of carbon monoxide poisoning, gangrene, wounds that won’t heal, and infections in which tissues are starved for oxygen. HBOT helps block the action of harmful bacteria and strengthens the body’s immune system. It also encourages the formation of new collagen and new skin cells. For this therapy, you enter a special chamber to breathe in pure oxygen in air pressure levels 1.5 to 3 times higher than average. The goal is to fill the blood with enough oxygen to repair tissues and restore normal body function.

Here are some of the conditions that benefit from hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

01. Gangrene
02. Acute or traumatic reduced blood flow
03. Comprised skin grafs or flaps
04. Infection of the bone
05. Radiation Injury
06. Soft tissue infections
07. Chronic infections
08. Diabetic Ulcers
09. Crush Injuries
10. Non-healing wounds

Vaccines are one of the best ways to protect yourself.

In our globalized, modern and mobile world, over 1 million people travel internationally every day.  Vaccines are one of the best ways to protect yourself from serious diseases, many of which can be life threatening.  In many countries, vaccine preventable diseases are still common, although they have been eradicated in the US.

There are three different types of vaccines: routine, required and recommended.  We suggest you schedule your consultation at lease 6 weeks prior to departure.  Vaccines for the purpose of foreign travel aren’t typically covered by health insurance plans, so CIDA doesn’t file a claim to your insurance provider.  We collect the full fee for each vaccine administered at the time of service.  We accept cash, check or credit card for payment.

Our Approach to Physician Referrals

Working with us

We focus on you, the whole patient, making sure that you have the support you need throughout your care. We are committed to clear and timely communication with you, your referring provider, and other healthcare specialists, beginning before your initial visit and continuing throughout your cycle of care.

Clear, collabrative cycle of care

Once our clinic receives a referral from your primary care provider, a member of the CIDA care team will communicate with your PCP to obtain needed medical records and other information.

If you have received medical treatment from a provider other than your primary care provider, the care team will contact you to receive a written Authorization to Receive Medical Records from your other provider(s). CIDA generally will schedule your initial appointment once we have received all relevant records. Once all records have been received and reviewed, a team member will contact you to schedule your initial consultation.
